I was just at the local Ford dealer scheduling a service for my truck. The GM, sales manager and a salesman were outside so I stopped to chat for a few minutes. They are getting an RS this year. It will be blue. They weren’t supposed to get an RS, but through some happy accident it happened.
I will not trade in my STi. I will not trade in my STi. I will not trade in my STi....

I’m sorry, were you coming here to be kept from doing stupid things? To find wisdom? With the way we encourage Bad Idea Theater, like, every day? You’d have better luck in the YouTube comments.

So, is it like you can’t buy an RS, if they don’t get one, can’t you just order one how you like it? As a European it boggles my mind that certain dealers can’t sell you a given model.

They can sell you one / order you one but it’s your place in line for that car to be built that may be up in the air. It’s feasible with the limited # being built that all anticipated production slots for 2016 delivery are spoken for.

Well, you could trade in our STi, but you don't know how much they'd mark up the RS since they only have one at the dealer.

Basically if they order you one, it comes out of the dealer allocation, so you basically can’t get one until it is their turn again (or you go all the way to the back of the line. That is of course extremely dumb, but it’s how things work here (and the main reason no one custom orders.)

Ford is requiring dealers to get “certified” to sell the RS, at a cost of a few thousand dollars. This includes training for mechanics to work on them. On top of that, they are only providing a few for each dealer.
This is why you see them marked up, the stores need to recoup their costs of “certification” just to sell them.

Youtube comments, not even once. And who says getting a Focus RS is stupid?

The RS seems to be production limited, so that makes it harder for dealers to get them. I suspect most are going to fill firm orders with only a handful here and there being allocated to dealers. Since this dealer is located in a rural area with relatively low income it is a bit of a surprise that they would get something like an RS. They do sell a lot of F-150's and usually have a Mustang or two on the lot though, so they do sell some fairly expensive vehicles.
Generally speaking if you want to order something special it isn’t a problem, there just ends up being a wait to get it because it hasn’t been built yet. I special ordered my truck from this dealer a few years ago, and would have ordered a new vehicle for my wife this spring if they hadn’t been able to find one close enough to the options that we were looking for.

Perhaps more reckless and wild than stupid, per se.

I never was a Ford guy, but then I drove a FiST(and bought one), now I’m a believer. If they did as well with the RS as they did the ST, I wouldn’t think twice about it if I could afford the trade.

I saw one in traffic this morning in white. First time I've seen one. I thought it sounded great.

You can't see the face from the drivers seat. I also prefer to think of it as the hockey player car since it's got a mouth guard.

I know I’m in the minority, but I’m not sure if I love the RS. It’s not that great looking, I’m not really impressed by the way they managed the torque split, and a used Evo with a few mods will probably eat it for lunch. On paper, the Evo X already has a better 0-60.
I suppose it’s all about what you’re after. The Evo and STi are hair on fire all the time cars. The driver videos I’ve seen of the RS (including Matt Farah’s video), it doesn’t seem to have that same next-level involvement that I would have expected. Fast? Yes. Trick? Yes. Hair on fire? I’m not certain.
The Golf R is probably a better comparison. It’s also refined. It’s also reserved in appearance. It’s also kind of a driving spec sheet.

I’m not sure if I love it or not, but I’m damn sure going to check it out when it comes in. And take it for a test drive.
As for actually purchasing it, it would have to be damn good. I really don’t care about 0-60 times outside of general usage. Lets be honest, the difference between 4 and 5 second 0-60 only makes a difference if you’re bench racing or drag racing, and I’m not that interested in doing either. If it is more fun through the twisties than my STi and does a better job of dealing with crappy roads then it would bear consideration.

I never really cared for their older stuff, but lately they’ve been knocking it out of the park. My dad had a Lincoln LS and an ‘02ish F-150. The LS was awesome to drive, but the ergonomics just didn’t work for me. The F-150 is a truck, but had some of the same weird ergonomic quirks as the LS. It also felt a lot more sluggish and rattly and tinny than my similar era GMC K1500.
In 2011 I picked up an F-150 with the 3.5 EB and have loved the truck. It is super solid, they got the ergonomics figured out and the power is phenomenal. We also just replaced my wifes Escape with a 2016 Explorer and that is an awesome family vehicle as was the Escape.
They really seem to nail the segments that their vehicles are in and I have to imagine the ST and RS are the same. Almost everyone that has the ST on here has loved it and they get rave reviews across the board no matter who is reviewing them. The initial reaction to the RS has been even greater than the ST, so I would be shocked if it isn’t a phenomenal car.

But I like my wife, kids, house and job. Plus if I bail on the job then I can’t afford to buy the RS.
